Communication with Members |
The WebsiteThe advantage of having a website is that much information can be provided at minimum cost, but it is likely that only about half of the members of our garden club will make use of it. Indeed usually it is only those people who are contributing to a website read it regularly, so we want to involve all members in collecting news and expressing opinions that they want to share with other members, whether it is by email or a scribbled note on the back of an envelope. What our garden club does not need is a high-tech site that may impress the broadband user as professional and state of the art, but simply infuriates the user of the cheaper dial-up connection, and is totally inaccessible to a member who does not have an internet connection at all. A wall newspaper is not high-tech, but simple text and pictures can provide all the information that is necessary for a local garden club to function effectively. We are trying to combine the advantages of both. The layout of the website is kept very simple, and the information it contains can be printed off, pinned to a display board, and shown at meetings and at the community events in Romsey. The website can also involve members by publishing pictures of their own gardens, whether they be formal flower gardens and lawns, full of vegetables for the kitchen, or a managed habitat for the birds, insects and small animals. The NewsletterThe Club also publishes a newsletter which for many members is more accessible than the website, as it can be distributed at meetings, made available at Ross Street Community Centre, at Cutlacks, 264 Mill Road, Cambridge, in public libraries as well as pushed through doors in Romsey. A copy of this will be available on the website, so that it can easily be printed off by members and distributed by them. |
